Mission Beach

Mission Beach is a culmination of the best treats that Far North Queensland has to offer. Not only does the golden beach stretch for over 14 kilometres with tropical islands scattered close by, but the water is calm, crystal clear, and brimming with fish. Accommodation at Mission Beach ranges from backpacker style to 5-star luxury villas set among the dense rainforest. The sun shines on Mission Beach - literally. There are few places you can go for a holiday where this combination of factors, coupled with the knowledge there are very few people here, meet in such a way.

The location of Mission Beach is another part of its attraction. It is approximately half way between Cairns and Townsville - just less than 2 hours drive from either direction. The beach is flanked by World Heritage tropical rainforest, which is inhabited by one of the largest cassowary populations in the world. Just offshore is the Great Barrier Reef. And lying right in front of the beach is the resort island, Dunk Island.

The beach is very flat - perfect for a large game of cricket at low tide. The water shelves gently, making it very safe for swimming. The waves are small because they are dampened by Dunk Island lying only 4kms offshore.

To access Mission Beach, drive along the Bruce Highway from Cairns or Townsville and simply follow the signs. There is a turn off from the highway heading east that leads through the rainforest for 25 kilometres. In the small townships dotted along the beachfront are restaurants, holiday shopping, medical facilities, banking, and transport services. There are two large shopping centres in the area, butchers, clothing stores, hairdressers, an art gallery, hardware store, petrol station and liquor store. Everything you need for a secluded holiday away from the city!

Note: This beach has a stinger net during the stinger season. When the stinger net is in place, please only swim inside its protective barriers. Swimming outside the nets exposes you to unnecessary dangers.
